Fighting Force: A Decent PC Port with Familiar Roots
Fighting Force, originally a PlayStation game, received a PC port that aimed to bring the classic beat-em-up action to a new platform. Developed by the same team behind Tomb Raider, one might expect a stellar experience. However, the reality falls short of those expectations.
The game’s premise revolves around a fully interactive city, reminiscent of titles like Double Dragon and Final Fight. You can wield everyday objects—trash cans, car tires—as weapons, adding an element of chaos to the brawling gameplay.
Choose from four characters, each with unique strengths. Yet, in practice, the choice doesn’t significantly impact your gameplay. The standard repertoire of punches, kicks, and grabs is available, along with character-specific special attacks. These powerful moves clear out enemies but come at the cost of your life bar. Unfortunately, originality isn’t Fighting Force’s strong suit.
Graphically, the game holds up decently, although the character models appear blocky—especially when compared to the impressive visuals of Tomb Raider. However, the real letdown lies in the lackluster enemies and overly easy gameplay. I defeated the final “boss” by relentlessly pounding the punch button, which dampened the overall enjoyment.
One redeeming feature is the existence of alternate routes, depending on your chosen path. But overall, Fighting Force feels like an uninspired attempt at a 3D Final Fight. Give it a try, but don’t be surprised if you find yourself longing for CAPCOM’s classic or even Little Fighter 2 soon! 😉🎮
